Today we sat down with Chi Tran, Director of Video Solutions under the Experience Design organization for SVX, to get a better glimpse into the thought and creation process behind SVX, our unprecedented video remote speaker microphone that combines Motorola Solutions’ secure voice, video and AI technology.
Chi, thanks for finding the time to walk us through SVX’s creation process. A question we were all curious about: what was your primary inspiration when it came to designing SVX?
As designers and problem solvers, we were imagining a world where we give officers more for less, a world where we can replicate what they see and hear, to help build trust in their communities. We were thinking about a world where we could protect their reputation and the public all at once – a world where we make their lives easier and safer. It was incredible to see it come to life in SVX and Assist, accompanied by the entire power of the Motorola Solutions ecosystem, all in one device.

The ability of SVX to combine evidence from high-quality video and sound in tandem with the power from the integrated Assist AI makes the lives of officers that much safer.
When an officer uses SVX for the first time, what idea did you want to come to mind?
SVX is the embodiment of key Motorola Solutions services, accessible in a single package – from translation and documentation, to communications and evidence. We wanted officers to see it as a kind of companion; SVX rides alongside you to document your day, from the start of shift to when you go home at the end of the day.

SVX is able to serve as a reliable companion due its swappable battery, which accommodates overtime easily.
Can you tell us how trial users reacted to SVX?
It was incredible to see all the reactions from the users during our research sessions; users saying that this is such a revolutionary solution, being amazed at how much we could pack into a device – intelligence, communications and evidence, all in something as compact as a single device they already carry today.
Last question for you, Chi! How did you see SVX changing the way police officers go about their day-to-day duties?
With SVX, evidence is more accurate and clearer than ever. As officers go about their day, they want to be able to replicate what they see, say, and do – something that’s inherently more difficult with two devices. Using SVX and Assist, offices can now more accurately and efficiently consolidate all that information into summarized reports. This allows them to document their shift, from morning to evening, without spending all the time in the back office writing reports. Officers can now focus on being more proactive than reactive, and focus on embedding themselves into the community to prevent crime – when designing SVX and Assist, we were trying to help move officers towards that new paradigm shift.
