How the New York City Police Foundation and New York Police Department are providing “Options” to the community

the New York City Police FoundationThe New York City Police Department (NYPD), the largest police force in the world, is often seen as a monolithic entity. But behind the blue uniforms and patrol cars lies a dedicated force striving to build a safer city – and a key part of its strategy involves fostering trust and transparency within the community. This is where the New York City Police Foundation (NYCPF) comes in, partnering with the NYPD to empower the youth of New York and bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community it serves.

The NYPD and NYCPF recognize that investing in young people is vital for a safer future. Their ‘Options’ program is a testament to this commitment. By providing opportunities for skill development, career exploration and mentorship, the program actively engages young people, keeping them occupied during peak crime hours and providing positive alternatives.

This isn’t just about keeping kids off the streets; it’s about building a sense of belonging and ownership within the community. Participants learn valuable skills – from social media marketing to event planning – and have the opportunity to work alongside NYPD officers and NYCPF staff. These experiences not only equip them for future employment but also foster a deeper understanding of law enforcement, dismantling stereotypes and building bridges of trust.

Through the program, young people are learning vital life skills that they wouldn’t perhaps have focused on within traditional education systems, such as public speaking and money management. With these skills comes confidence and self-esteem, starting young New Yorkers on the path to becoming productive and engaged members of society.

Motorola Solutions is proud to be a partner in promoting the important work of the NYPD and NYCPF. We’ve hosted social media and content creation sessions with program participants, helping them develop their skills and share their stories. Our ongoing collaboration ensures that the Options program receives the recognition it deserves and that the message of community empowerment reaches a wider audience.

We recently had the opportunity to witness the program firsthand. We attended the Options program’s summer job fair, where young people enthusiastically showcased their skills and connected with potential employers. A visit to one of their Bronx offices revealed a vibrant space filled with energy and purpose, where youth participants were engaged in creative projects, learning new skills and building camaraderie.

The NYPD and NYCPF are demonstrating that a truly safe city is not just about enforcing the law but about investing in its people. By working together, they are empowering youth, fostering trust and creating a future where every member of the community feels valued and protected. This initiative is a powerful reminder that breaking down barriers and building bridges starts with a simple act of hope, and that investing in the youth is an investment in the future of the city.
