Encompassing 26 square miles with an average rainfall of 45 inches, Weston, Florida is subject to extreme weather that can deluge the city with large amounts of water in a short period of time. Weston uses an extensive stormwater management system to allow visitors to keep enjoying an outdoor-focused lifestyle.

However, Weston only employs a staff of five technicians to manage its stormwater system, making it difficult to manage a stormwater pumping system largely manually monitored. This creates challenges like decreased response times due to technicians having to drive out to bases to turn the pumps on and off. According to Peter Johnson, the City of Weston Assistant Director of Public Works, “when a storm was coming, up to 50% of our technicians’ time would be spent managing and monitoring the systems.”
